Why most online ads never create real customers
The attention economy has a supply problem: attention given for free is withdrawn for free. Understanding that collapse explains why performance keeps eroding.

There is a slow collapse running underneath digital advertising, and it is not about creative quality or platform algorithms. It is about the terms of the exchange.
Attention with no price
When a consumer gives attention and receives nothing, the transaction has no value on their side. Rational behaviour follows: skip, mute, block, scroll. Every year the willing audience shrinks, and every year advertisers bid harder for what remains.
If attention has no value to people, they ignore or block ads. Costs rise, effectiveness falls, and both sides lose.
Why more budget does not fix it
Adding budget to a channel with a declining willing audience buys more of the same disengagement. The impression count rises. The customer count does not. This is the trap most SMEs fall into: the dashboard rewards them for spending, not for growing.
What restores the exchange
- Give the consumer something real for their attention, instantly, not as points to chase.
- Gate the reward behind a completed action so the engagement is genuine.
- Verify the action before anyone is billed or paid.
- Report outcomes in units a business owner recognises: visits, purchases, signups.
When people benefit from giving attention, they engage willingly. When businesses get measurable results, they keep investing. Fixing the exchange fixes both sides at once, and that is the only durable way out of the collapse.
